If we gave an award for ‘most luxurious item’ these merino baselayers would win hands down. You might be familiar with the properties of merino wool from your adult baselayers, but if not… it’s impressive stuff. It resists odour build up, is low bulk, cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s not, and – something I didn’t know before – it’s also hypoallergenic. As all true merino should be, this stuff is also traceable, say the company. Our daughter tried the ‘ski bundle’, which consists of both top and bottoms, both of which are simply gorgeous. The leggings feature a dropped gusset for ease of movement, all the seams are flat for comfort, and low bulk fabric means it can be purchased oversized and rolled up, in order to last longer as they grow. Merino isn’t cheap, but our daughter’s set has been worn for months on and off and is only just needing its second wash.
VERDICT: A miracle material, beautifully tailored with youngsters in mind.
BEST FOR: Universal use – skiing, but also everyday walking and camping.
