Maier are quite new to the UK, but their USP is in offering over 60 sizes for all walks of life. For me, these are nigh on perfect 2-3 season walking trousers. They are very light, fairly stretchy and extremely breathable and fast drying. The fabric is thin and wicks well, so these are ideal for warmer weather or for those of us who ‘run hot’.
I love the facility to roll up the legs (3/4 length) – 2 buttons on each leg keep the fabric where it’s put. Otherwise, the hem has a simple bungee fastener to cinch the fabric into the ankle. The pockets are all zipped, and the hip pockets even come with storm flaps. The fit is close but not tight or clingy, and they did conform to my shape after a few hours. It’s great to be able to find an off the peg ‘short leg’ that actually fits, avoiding flappy, soggy fabric at the ankle. There are lots of colours available and all offer UV protection and a PFC free water repellent treatment. Weight on my scales, exactly 400g.
► Verdict: Deceptively simple, but excellent performance and smart enough to wear off the hill too.
► Best for: Hill walking and backpacking in the summer months.
