La Sportiva TX4 – Editor’s Choice

Starting with the dotty pattern outsole, made from ultra grippy Vibram Mega-Grip, and all the way to its asymmetric shape, this is a shoe that looks ready for the rock. However, it’s not quite a thoroughbred approach shoe; the fit is wide in the forefoot to allow toes to spread and relax and there is lots of cushioning in the midsole, both features that suit long days hiking. These traits could detract from its sensitivity when scrambling, but the shoe is saved by excellent stiffness and stability combined with a businesslike lacing system so that sufficient precision can easily be found to take on steeper terrain. The leather uppers are reinforced to resist abrasion with a rubber cap protecting the toes. In summary, it’s a high performing all rounder with leanings towards the vertical, which is ideal, in my book.
