These are the only fully fledged softshell trousers here, and so you’d expect them to be the warmest. However, the ‘flex shield’ material seems pretty versatile – I’ve worn these on a winter Munro as well as in sunny woodland, and they’ve kept me comfortable in both. There’s lots of stretch and breathability is good, and the fabric is PFC free and bluesign approved, so good on the environmental front too.
There are zippered hip and rear (wallet) pockets, a zippered leg pocket, all of a decent size. There’s also a single popper and zelcro reinforced waist which works well enough to keep the trousers where they should be. The knee is articulated and the fit is fairly roomy. The let-down for me is the Velcro fasteners at the ankles. I tend to avoid this type of fastener as it easily becomes clogged with mud, snow or ice in more demanding conditions. Weight 450g.
► Verdict: Stretchy softshell and not too warm.
► Best for: Maintained trails over 3-4 seasons.
