The Cyclone is a 2 layer kids hardshell made without PFC’s in a ‘Parka’ style. As you can see, I got my test request a little wrong and it’s oversized on my 5-year-old, but she doesn’t mind a bit. It comes equipped with ‘grow sleeves’ for those of you who don’t order a size too large! In addition, there’s a mesh inner, a fleecy neck, a detachable and adjustable hood with a peak, and 2 huge pockets. My daughter asked me to report that it has both a zip and a button down stormguard, which has kept the weather out (and dad is impressed with her technical appraisal!). All the seams are taped and the sleeves are gently elasticated. It’s been an excellent all-round performer over our very soggy Scottish summer, offering ample cover while staying breathable enough for her not to overheat. The longer length keeps her bottom covered on her bike, preventing soggy leggings, and the roomy fit has enabled us to get a puffy layer underneath for colder days. As such it feels a bit more adaptable than closer fitting, mountain orientated waterproofs she’s tried previously. She’s a big fan of this jacket.
▶ Verdict: Weatherproof, roomy and breathable.
▶ Best for: Everything, from school to bike rides and rainy walks.
