Function is key with these Fjӓllrӓven trousers. They have a plethora of big, deep pockets that fit full maps and large smart phones. They are heavy at 514g, but also heavy duty. The fabric is thick but breathable and can be treated with Greenland wax if you want them to be more waterproof and windproof. The reinforced knees and bum have a double layer of fabric which means I was happy to sit or kneel in them. If you are likely to spend a lot of time on your knees there is a special stitched section which allows you to add paddling. You get a good range of movement from the pre-bent knees and they are very comfortable around the waist and hips when wearing a pack. On the whole, the size 14 felt a little baggy – the legs were rather wide and they felt shapeless (I may have benefitted by going a size smaller). One thing that can be fitted to your size, however, is the leg length. They have an adjustable ‘raw’ hem which means you can cut and sew them to make the perfect length. If sewing your own trousers isn’t an option then the Fjӓllrӓven Vidda Trousers are the same design but come in fixed leg lengths.
► Verdict: Heavy duty and hard wearing for harsher climates.
► Best for: Tough terrain where you’ll be more hands-on.
