One of a family of products using the G-1000 fabric, a mix of polyester and cotton (65/35%). Normally I’d give cotton a wide berth in the outdoors – it’s well known for wetting out – but the G1000 mix provides a durable and weather resistant material that drys fast. It can be treated with Greenland wax for extra weather proofing and it’s densely woven, so resists insects, thorns and UV.
There’s good movement in the knees, and a higher back so as not to interfere with a rucksack. There are several pockets, handy for gloves, hats, maps and snacks. The leg pockets are all button type and deep, and the hip pockets have no fasteners but are very deep. The reinforced knees can also be fitted with a pad for canoeing or ranger work.
What separates the Barents from others in the range is that the leg is left plain. It’s a simple job to cut and sew to fit your leg length and footwear exactly. Not the cheapest here but very durable, hence the ‘best buy’ badge. Weight 567g.
► Verdict: Hard wearing and well-made, in a high-performance fabric.
► Best for: All year-round hiking and general outdoor work.
