If you’re going to buy anything on this kit list, definitely buy these. The Ascent Waterproof Trousers are, obviously, waterproof, but also windproof, durable and surprisingly warm. I’m aware that to any person near my age they’ll probably seem like a piece of kit that isn’t really necessary, but when you are going on any adventure in the UK, whether it be a mile-long walk around a local park or a three day DofE trip, you’re almost certain to encounter some kind of dirt or water. These trousers enable you to keep anything under them clean and dry, meaning you don’t even have to be wearing walking clothes underneath. They are high-rise (my favourite!), have an adjustable hem and waist, have secure pockets to keep your valuables dry and are lightweight – only 275 grams – and easily packable, making them the ideal addition to an explorer’s wardrobe. A hydrostatic head of 5,000mm is the welcome sign of their waterproofing.
► Verdict: Excellent waterproof over trousers for the price.
► Best for: Watery adventures.
