The heaviest jacket on test, the Cascade Ridge doesn’t look or feel like other softshell jackets. Its focus is keeping you warm and cosy in blustery weather and on this front, it delivers. The windproof fabric is soft, both inside and out, with a luxurious microfleece lining, even in the pockets. The cuffs are adjustable to keep out draughts, even in gloves. The hood is removable, so you can use the jacket as a stand-alone item. This does mean an excess of fabric at the front where the collar and hood overlap. The hood is adjustable but it didn’t fit as well as others on test, especially with a ponytail, and the peak isn’t stiffened so offers no extra protection for the face.
VERDICT: A good price for a warm jacket, but a little bulky.
BEST FOR: Cold days when you need some warmth.
