The Extrem 5000 is well designed to fit a woman’s body. The standard size takes our hips into consideration, meaning you don’t have to buy a larger size jacket to accommodate them. The rest of the jacket fit well, including with layers underneath. The cuffs are easily adjustable, and the zip pulls easy to use, even in gloves. At 517g it should feel heavy but it wasn’t noticeable either in my pack or when I was wearing it. The material does feel durable but not stiff or restrictive. The main pockets start high up on the jacket which allows you easy access when wearing a bag or harness. The two-way zip means you can easily access layers under the jacket, great if you are storing things in warm layers underneath. The hood fit well, and is helmet compatible, with the adjustments hidden inside to retain its clean appearance. The large, stiffened peak helped to keep lots of rain off my face. There are two small chest pockets for a compass or smart phone, one on the inside and one on the outside. It also has pit zips to help with breathability when you are active. It doesn’t come in an inspiring range of colours, but I can forgive the designer since everything else is so carefully considered.
► Verdict: Great fit and excellent attention to detail.
► Best for: A fantastic jacket for tough conditions.
