The AR here stands for All Round, which describes these very well indeed. While being nearly three times as expensive as the Best Buy, the Alpha AR ticks all the boxes. It’s a warm glove with 100g of primaloft, but thankfully not too warm. That keeps the bulk down and dexterity up, very welcome when you are hanging off your axes at a strange angle with a heavy pack on your back. Palm, knuckles and fingertips are all soft leather, the wrist cinch is Velcro and the gauntlet is deep and wide enough to fit over a jacket sleeve, and can be tied off to seal the glove against the elements. Waterproofing is from the house of Gore and doesn’t flinch, even though gloves are exposed to all sorts of abuse. Wrist leashes are also present and correct. Overall, these are stiffer than the Berghaus AQ Mountain, but less armoured and more manoeuvrable than the BD Punishers, which for me is about the perfect place to have my hands when things get really mountainy! The only failing I can think of is the lack of a thumb nosewipe. Not cheap, but should last several seasons if cared for properly. Weight per pair 220g.
VERDICT: A very tough, warm and durable all rounder.
BEST FOR: Alpinism, winter mountaineering.
