Alpkit are renowned for making honest, good quality, low-priced equipment that really works in the mountains; and the PipeDream 250 is a great example of that. It’s super-lightweight – just 640g – and it packs down incredibly small, helping to keep pack size and weight to an absolute minimum. But it’s a definite 2-season/summer bag only – although alpinists might use it as a liner with another bag to make a versatile sleeping system. The insulation comes from 250g of 750 fill power, ethically –sourced down, which provides great warmth for weight. But it’s let down a little by the lack of a shoulder baffle, which means really tightening the hood to keep warmth in – not always perfect. It has a full-length zip, something I’m almost surprised about, as weight can easily be saved here, and the DWR coated outer fabric is pretty efficient, as I found out with a small water spillage! At £115, this really is a great value bag – definitely affordable purely to make summer backpacks as light and comfy as possible. Highly recommended.
