Alpkit seem to think full gaiters are just for keeping your trousers dry, but keeping water, snow and ice out of my boots also stops your toes freezing and falling off in the cold months, so I reckon they’re are underselling a winter essential. The brand haven’t cut corners on the design and build, though. A substantial Velcro enclosure at the front, plus a nicely tapered cut keeps them snug and snag free, and there’s a very tough and adjustable underfoot strap that the brand will replace free of charge in one of their stores if you wear it out. There’s another clasp at the top, which helps keep the gaiter above the calf but could perhaps use a touch more cinch-ability. The fabric is in two parts – a lighter upper, and an abrasion resistant cordura nearer the boot, which looks like it will withstand the odd crampon point. I didn’t find them to be very breathable, but then full-length gaiters like these really come into their own in the cold.
►Verdict: Nicely designed and very durable winter essential at a good price.
►Best for: Winter walking, mountaineering, and bog trotting.
