THIS YEAR, HEAD TO KENYA FOR UNBRIDLED ADVENTURE
When you think of Kenya, often the first thing that springs to mind is a vast flat landscape filled with elephants, wildebeest, antelope and Acacia trees. This beautiful image does represent much of Kenya, but the country’s attributes certainly don’t end there. Stretching over 200,000 square miles, Kenya has one of the most varied landscapes in the world. Climb wild rugged mountains with glorious vistas or explore windswept beaches with untouched coral reefs. Ride pounding rivers twisting around lush green forests and experience a range of wildlife that you could never imagine seeing in one place. In short, Kenya has it all.
Take a week to combine luxury with adventure and explore Kenya on horseback, by bike, on foot, by raft, by jeep, under the sea, and by air to get a completely different perspective of Kenya and see the variety this country has to offer.
WHITE WATER RAFTING
Although the Zambezi is the more famous, the Tana River, rushing and twisting around Kenya’s countryside is the second wildest in Africa. Featuring a mix of grades 2-5 rapids amongst stunning animal and birdlife, the river is often used for army training and is a hot spot for adrenaline junkies. You will find that white water rafting on the Tana is one of the best ways to see Kenya’s buzzards, lizards, herons and weaver birds whilst experiencing an exhilarating white knuckle ride.
To enjoy a bird’s eye view of the land, leave early morning to hike up Mt Kenya. Having reached the summit by on foot, take a moment to breathe in the clear air and take in the spectacular views while enjoying a champagne breakfast. The nearby animal orphanage will allow you to experience Kenya’s famous wild life up close.
FOREST RETREAT
Descending back down to sea level, make your next stop an eco lodge deep in the forest in the heart of the rift valley. Situated beside the Malewi river, a spot where hippo and buffalo come to drink, the Kigio Wildlife Conservancy is all about getting as close to nature as possible, but leaving no human mark. Embark on a fascinating night safari where you will see giraffe, zebras and warthogs and some of the 207 species of birds living there, as well as spotting tell tale signs of pythons and anteaters. Or experience pure tranquillity and a feeling of being completely at one with nature as you relax in the silence of the euphorbia forest.
DIANI REEF
From pythons to monkeys – as your landscape changes from forest to exotic beachside garden, so does the wildlife. Enjoy a spot of sun bathing and some pampering spa treatments at the Leopard Beach Resort in between swimming, kayaking and waterskiing in the Indian Ocean diving lessons in the pool. Once prepared, head out to the glorious Diani reef and explore the beautiful coral reef with its colourful marine life and clear turquoise waters.
WHALE SHARK SPOTTING
If you would prefer to see the reef from a height, take a whale shark spotting tour by plane through Severin Air Safaris. Measuring up to 18 metres long, whale sharks are a magnificent sight to behold, and from November to April, it is possible to see up to 20 in a morning. As well as looking out for sharks, take the time to experience the infinite and changing horizons of East Africa and its huge potential as a holiday destination from a prime position in the air.
